Search all WA Government Sites Print this page	There are several sites within Western Australia where you can see working examples of renewable energy technologies. A large number of these demonstration sites have been developed with funding assistance from the WA Government through the Sustainable Energy Development Office Grants Program. Remote area power supply display at Murdoch University The RISE Outdoor Test Area (ROTA) operates a remote area power supply (RAPS) display. The display is powered completely by wind and solar energy and demonstrates the operation of inverters, battery storage and appliances. There are three demonstration systems. One simulates the requirements of a large pastoralist homestead with high energy demand and load. The second is like a remote country home with modest energy needs and the third, a smaller scale holiday shack or caravan with basic requirements for lighting and refrigeration. To help inform people in rural and remote areas about the renewable energy systems ROTA also has a web adress at, www.rise.org.au, which allows you to view the display without needing to physically travel to the site. Environmental Technology Centre at Murdoch University Murdoch University also has an Environmental Technology Centre (ETC) which showcases working technologies compatible with sustainable development, including solar desalination, wind and solar powered water pumping systems and composting toilets. ETC's visitors centre, which is used for seminars and courses, is powered entirely by renewable energy. Grid-connected renewable energy system at Apace Perth schools and the general public can visit a grid-connected renewable energy system on display at APACE, a not-for-profit community organisation in North Fremantle. The renewable energy system incorporates a wind generator and an array of photovoltaic (PV) panels and is used to demonstrate the use of small-scale renewable energy in urban situations. The display forms part of the Zoo's larger environmental program at Homestead Farm and includes a grid-connected PV installation and a small demonstration wind turbine. Environmental Education Centre at Piney Lakes Reserve The City of Melville operates an Environmental Education Centre at Piney Lakes Reserve in Winthrop. Electricity for the centre is supplied from a RAPS system comprising a photovoltaic array, wind turbine, inverter and storage batteries. Stand-alone solar lighting units are also used for areas adjacent to the centre. The centre provides school and tertiary students, community groups and the general public access to a working example of renewable energy technologies in an integrated setting. Rockingham Regional Environmental Centre The Rockingham Regional Environmental Centre is currently being built to provide information, education services and eco-tourism activities to the community. A working demonstration of a grid connected wind/solar system is being developed at the centre to facilitate education of students and the wider community about renewable energy. Grid-connected photovoltaic system in Margaret River The Carters Road Community in Margaret River is installing a grid-connected PV power system to demonstrate renewable energy technologies to schools and the general public.
