Improving energy efficiency through sound energy management practices is an essential component of the Government’s commitment to reducing the cost of services and managing global climate change. As outlined in Premier's Circular 2008/11, all agencies participating in the Energy Smart Government program are required to complete an Energy Management Plan. Sound energy management practices are an essential part of successfully achieving the objectives of the Energy Smart Government policy. Energy management should not be undertaken in isolation or treated as a purely technical issue but should be a strategic component of a comprehensive management plan. Agencies that incorporate an energy reduction strategy under the umbrella of a management plan are more likely to achieve greater energy savings. The plan should contain steps for implementing energy management and energy efficiency initiatives and include a commitment of staff resources. The Sustainable Energy Development Office oversees the Energy Smart Government initiative. However, it is up to Chief Executive Officers of individual agencies to report annual results and ensure program targets are achieved. It is therefore important for energy management to be an integral part of agencies' business management plans. Each agency’s Energy Management Plan must be signed off by its CEO. A template for the Energy Management Plan is available below and includes examples to assist with its development. Energy Managment Plan Template (PDF 80 KB).
