System Size

When choosing your heater make sure to size it correctly. A heater which is too large may cost more to operate, may have a greater environmental impact and may create uncomfortable conditions. On the other hand, an undersized heater will not provide adequate heating.

Generally, portable heaters are designed for small areas, built in space heaters for one or two large rooms and central heaters for several rooms or even your whole house. Sometimes it can be more economical and practical to use a combination of heaters rather than one large heater depending on which rooms you want to heat, when you want to heat them and for how long. As a general rule, the bigger the area you want to heat, the bigger the heater required and the more it will cost to run. For room heaters, you can use the rule of thumb of 0.10kW of heat output per square metre. This is assuming you have standard height ceilings (2.4m) with insulation.
