First Steps

Keeping your home warm needn't use a lot of energy. Energy efficient homes can stay warm with little artificial heating so before you buy a new heater, consider what you can do to reduce your heating requirements:
• Fit insulation in the ceiling cavity
• Stop draughts coming through doors, windows and floorboards
• Keep heat in with pelmets and curtains or heavy blinds on windows
• Only heat rooms in use
• Don't overheat the house - set the thermostat setting between 18ēC - 20 ēC
• Wear appropriate clothing for the winter season.

Using less energy produces fewer greenhouse gases and less pollution, both when you directly burn fuel to heat your home and when fuel is burnt at a power station to make electricity.
